If you’ve listened to rap in the last decade, you’ve heard Metro Boomin — you just might not have known it. The St. Louis-born producer (real name Leland Tyler Wayne) has quietly become one of the most dominant forces in hip-hop, and his body of work speaks louder than any interview ever could.

He started making noise early. Back in 2016, he linked up with 21 Savage for Savage Mode, a collab EP that crept up to No. 23 on the Billboard 200 Wikipedia and basically rewired what Atlanta trap could sound like. That dark, eerie aesthetic — the kind of beat that feels like it’s stalking you — became his calling card.

Then came the collabs. Without Warning with 21 Savage and Offset dropped on Halloween 2017, Double or Nothing with Big Sean followed a month later Wikipedia, and just like that, Metro had cemented himself as the go-to guy for every rapper who wanted their project to hit different. His debut solo album Not All Heroes Wear Capes arrived in November 2018 and debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 Wikipedia — a massive statement for a producer stepping into the spotlight on his own terms.

He wasn’t done. Savage Mode II in 2020 also went straight to the top of the Billboard 200 Wikipedia, this time with 21 Savage again, and it became one of the defining rap albums of that year. Then Heroes & Villains in late 2022 kept the streak alive — narrated by A$AP Rocky and Morgan Freeman, it debuted at No. 1 and was eventually certified Platinum Albums in Order. At this point it wasn’t even surprising anymore. It was just Metro being Metro.

2024, though, was genuinely something else. We Don’t Trust You with Future dropped in March and had the biggest opening week of the year at that point, with “Like That” featuring Kendrick Lamar hitting No. 1 on the Hot 100. Wikipedia Less than a month later, We Still Don’t Trust You came out and also debuted at the top of the charts Wikipedia. Two No. 1 albums in three weeks. That doesn’t happen.

And through all of it — the solo runs, the collabs, the soundtrack work — the signature never changed. Heavy bass, gothic melodies, drums that hit like a freight train. Metro specializes in trap, but there’s always been something cinematic about the way he builds a beat Wikipedia, something that makes even a throwaway track feel like the score to a movie you haven’t seen yet.

Whether he’s building with Future, riding for 21 Savage, or going solo, Metro Boomin has never really had a down period. That’s rare. And that’s why his name keeps showing up, album after album, year after year.
